She was the youngest child that was born to Marcela Quintanilla. Selena started her professional career at the age of eight years old in a band that was that was formed by Abraham Quintanilla. Selena was a part of her older siblings Abraham Junior who was playing the bass guitar, and sister Suzette was playing the drums. Selena performed as the leader of the band. The group was named Selena Y Los Dino and they would play with her siblings in various bars restaurants wedding fairs and other events. Selena, her sisters and their parents were always busy with the band. They did not have any kind of childhood. But Abraham encouraged them to become committed musicians through his dedication. Abraham Senior was part of the band Los Dinos. Selena Y Los Dinos were officially established in the year 1981. It was the group's principal business, and the primary source of family income. Quintanilla was determined, even though not having much money at the beginning. They worked towards becoming a successful family group. Their patience would eventually pay dividends in the 1980's when Selena Y Los Dinos gained popularity in the west states. Selena is the singer who was lead in the group won two awards in the Tejano Awards of 1986: Female Vocalist of The Year, and also the Performer. Selena Y Los Dinos gained recognition and fame after that. They appeared on many Spanish language television shows including El Show De Johnny Canales Siempre En Domingo and Sabado Gigante.
